Art – Junior High and High School
High School Art
Hi! I am Joanne Berry. This is a picture taken at the gift shop at Mount Vernon. A group of Moore students and parents went to Washington D.C. last June 2016. It was an amazing adventure. We learned so much and had tons of fun!
I am beginning my 15th year teaching at Moore School. I teach American Government (Seniors), American Literature (Juniors), World History (Sophomores), Geography (8th), English 8 (8th), and Junior High Art.
Here is a little bit of information about me. I moved from Buffalo, New York, to Brockport, New York, to begin my undergraduate studies at State University New York at Brockport in 1979. I moved back to Buffalo a year later and transferred to SUNY Buffalo. I was at Buffalo State when I wandered into the National Student Exchange office one day while waiting for a class to begin. I applied for an exchange and the following year moved to Bozeman. I left Bozeman at the end of the Spring semester driving south to my parents' new home in San Diego. I got to the Idaho border and turned around. I have been in Montana ever since.
I received my B.S. degree from MSU Bozeman in 1984 with a secondary education Social Studies concentration and an English minor. In 2005, I returned to MSU to complete an art endorsement. I received the Montana History Teacher of the Year Award in 2008 and the James Madison Scholarship in 2009. I have attended summer courses at Ashland University, Ashland, Ohio, since then. I expect to earn a masters degree in American History in May 2017. My thesis topic is on Thomas Jefferson, Henry Adams, and the American mind. I am interested in how the American mind has stayed the same or changed in the first hundred years of the founding. I am also interested in art and the way art reflects changes in our society.
I enjoy lots of different activities including fly fishing, baseball, hiking, and yoga. My favorite western history novel is The Last Crossing by Guy Vanderhaeghe. If you have not read it, you should. It is as good as western history gets. My second favorite book is The Education of Henry Adams. My favorite female fiction author is Flannery O'Connor. I also love to read poetry. My favorite poets are Billy Collins, Li Young Lee, Octavio Paz, ee cummings, and many more. My absolute favorite writer is Mark Twain. Typing his name brings a smile to my face.
My other education is from being a mother of four children, a first-generation American, and a transplanted New Yorker living in Montana.
